Bash it up!
June 15th, 2009

Many of you came to our booth at the X96 Big A. .s.show and many of you saw a lot of the paint that was getting thrown around.  Well if the paint was too much for you well at least we were giving away bull rides for free.  This was our day to show that Big Tobacco is in it for the money.  They are greedy pigs and in a time of swine flu, it's time to eradicate them!

Of course we are including some pics for your visual pleasures and remember if you like what you see you can sign up to be part of the board of youth that run this group.  And if you don't like what you see, never forget to stand up for what you believe.  Tobacco kills one out of three users, and Big Tobacco is STILL making money off of those people.

The beginning of a very messy Art Contest!

Some free rides in some stylin threads...

Sweet Fender Guitar signed by the Bash Bands

Aspiring artist, whom I believe have a big future in art!

A winner! We don't make this up!

It was a fun night! Thanks for everyone sporting the awesome shirts, you will be the most popular kid at school! Boo yeah! And we'll see you at the next event!

Kick Butts Day, a day you can always remember
March 24th, 2009

Hey its time to put some steel toed boots on and make a foot print on the butt of Big Tobacco.  Make this your chance to SHOUT back that their manipluation isn't going to get you!

Join the Phoenix Alliance as the youth join together at the Salt Lake Public Library with their buddy bag.  Actually it's a body bag, but did you know that tobacco kills ONE out of THREE users?  I would hate to be that third person! Each person will have two friends there, one of which is an empty body bag.  Who know what friend you have that uses tobacco will end up in that bag.

We will then place our bags in a giant awareness ribbon on the corn lawn next to the library.  People should be aware that tobacco comapines are KILLING off their customers and are looking for niave teenagers to replace the ones they lost.  They don't care about the parents that die early, they are after the ones that are alive that can keep buying a worthless product.

If that ticks you off, then we hope to see you at:

Salt Lake City Library 400 S 200 E, 4-6pm.

Don't be pushed around by a corporation that tells you what to do.

Just found some interesting stuff
December 9th, 2008

So Phoenix Alliance member did some reasearch about Tobacco advertisements and she found some stuff you should see...

Tobacco ads usually have a lot of sexual  tension: Their respons...

"The age at which people start smoking is between 15 and 25.  True, one may now not sell cigarettes to minors.  But during this target age, people discover their sexuality.  So this is the way we speak to them.  If anybody has a complaint about the ads, he is older, with a conservative morality."

The Companies want you to feel beautiful but more importantly INDEPENDENT and Living Life By NO RULES! Well we are, but does smoking have to be any part of it?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Cartoon characters were targeted towards little kids.  Camel cigarettes smoking increased 30% during that campaign!

What I hate more than cartoons, is the race card they pull, and try to get specific ethnic groups to smoke.  With all the civil rights acts we have and stand up for, they all become obliterated when it comes to smoking.

"Virgina Slims ad featured an Asian woman in traditional Asian makeup and clothing accompanied by a statement that read, 'In silence I see. With wisdom, I speak.' To suggest that tobacco use liberates Asian American women, not only patronizing and offensive, but sexist and racist"

Other classic lines from the Industry:

"The base of our buisness is the High School student. Itis the "IN" brand to smoke if you want to be one of the group" 1970 Lorillard memo

"Realistiacally, if our Company is to survive and prosper, over the long term, wemust get our share of the youth market. In my opion, this willrequire new brands tailored to the youth market." Claud Teague, RJR 1973

"We don't smoke it, we sell it.  We reserve that right for the YOUNG, the BLACK, the POOR and the STUPID." David Goerlitz former model quoting the tobacco executive.

Enjoy your Holiday season, and if you are interested in helping someone quit for a present, call 1-888-567-TRUTH.

Oh Ye-ay, we rocked the streets!
November 25th, 2008

Hey THANK YOU to everyone that came out to our event. Seriously we did so awesome!  To recap in case you missed it, about 60 to 70 of us showed up, held our signs and marched around downtown Salt Lake!  We armed ourselves with quit card, education and an advocacy spirit that couldn't be ignored!

If you don't read anything else, just read: THIS!  We made the news and the story is amazing!  A lot of us were quoted, and the article really gives our group a good name!

Another great moment of our event, was working with Salt Lake youth group Teen Advocates Against Tobacco. They were great helping us make posters, line up our march route and increased our numbers!  Check out what they are up to by clicking HERE!

The begining of our march.  Bull horns are so awesome!

Smiling happy faces.  All happy to see the tobacco industry go down.  We had Tobacco ads on one side, and Lose their Label on the other with the quit line.  If the tobacco companies think they can sterotype us into becoming their smokers, they are dead wrong!

The Truth is, you can get help quitting smoking! Whether it is through the Phoenix Alliance, your best friend or the quit line, call for help! It's easier with friends!

Camel came out with a pink cigarette to attrack girls to start using it.  Just because it's pink? Really? And don't forget Joe Camel was created so little little kids would remember him and pick up smoking.  So callous and cheap these tobacco companies are!

The great thing about double sided posters, You can read it from the back!

Here is the sea of youth that showed up for this!

The fighting faces of today's teenagers!

We got a little bit inventive with the signs, and looks like we did a good job!

We finished the night by gathering at the Leonardo's Body World Exhibit.  It's kind of cool because they have real black lungs in there that show how bad smoking can be.  It was really nice to be apart of this. Everyone was so positive, we really are not against smokers, we want to help.  And if the tobacco companies quit selling a product that kills when used as intended, then we've made a difference!

Here is what remains of the group as we hung out and chatted with people at the exhibit.  I think we handed out 300 quit cards, so hopefully 300 people quit today!

Rise up, speak out...Quit Smoking!
November 17th, 2008

The Great American Smokeout is to get everyone to quit smoking for ONE day, NOV 20!!! How we will get the word out by petitioning on the streets of Salt Lake.  Wear black shirts, bundle up and bring your friends!  We will provide the picket signs and info, all you have to do is be there! Questions? Call 801-538-7085

So much for voting....
November 5th, 2008

Now some of you can vote, and some of you can't. Some don't want to and some hate all the options we have.  BUT did you know who is getting money from tobacco companies to keep this country going?  And look at our lovely Congress people from Utah are taking!!

Paul Rolly from the Salt Lake Trib puts it out there for us to know.

Read: Legislators may not chew or smoke, but they inhale cash from Big Tobacco

Make up your mind who you want running your taxes.  Is it no joke that the tobacco industry get's away with selling a product killing 1 out of 3 of it's users.  Hmmm go politics!

*Fighting Fire with Fire*
October 28th, 2008

entry By Garret

Did you know that tobacco kills more Americans each year then AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, illegal drugs, and fires combined? Tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death in the U.S, and kills over 440,000 Americans every year! This means 1,200 Americans will die today, one every 72 seconds! Stunning facts like this are what have given birth to The Phoenix Alliance, a statewide advocacy group led by teens determined to make a difference and fight back against the corporate criminals of the tobacco industry.

The reason why the tobacco industry has such a huge success is because they are lead by masters of manipulation, and will do just about anything they can to hook their next victim. There is no limit, rules, or regulations as to what they may add to their products to get you addicted. Some of the ingredients discovered so far include, over 45 known carcinogens and over 101 classified poisons. The Phoenix Alliance finds this unacceptable, and spends its time educating Utah's youth about the Industry's lies and arming them with the skills and knowledge they need to fight back and make educated decisions. Quoting from their website, "The Phoenix Alliance is unique in that it is a youth led movement. We are not against smokers we are against the industry."

You might have wondered why they call themselves the Phoenix Alliance, when this group is from Utah. The Phoenix they are referring to is not the busy city in Arizona. They are talking about a mythical bird, and they chose it as their symbol for good reason. "The name Phoenix Alliance comes from the bird found in mythology of Greece, Egypt, and Christianity, and others. When the bird matures it will turn into the rays of the sun, sing a wonderful melody and burst into flames. From the ashes of the mature Phoenix, a newborn chick arises. So we at the Phoenix Alliance are the Youth rising from the ashes of those who died uneducated."

I first became aware of the Phoenix Alliance last spring, while I was on my way to work. While listening to the radio, a commercial came on about the dangers of tobacco and the disgusting lies the tobacco industry feeds our nation. The ad ended with an invitation to join them in rebelling against these corporate killers and allowing my voice to be heard. When I got home from work that night, I went to their website and eagerly joined.

Later that summer I received an application from the Alliance, requesting me to apply for a position on their Youth Leadership Board. Seeing this as my chance to participate in the Alliance, I quickly accepted and filled out the application, then sent it in. Soon after, I was informed that I had been chosen to help lead the Alliance this following year, with several other teens from around the state.

After attending the first opening social and planning meeting, I knew that this was the place for me. Since then, I and the rest of the leadership board have been working hard to get Utah's youth involved. Working alongside The Truth, with their anti-tobacco campaigns, we have attended various events such as The AST Dew Tour, hosted recently by Salt Lake City, along with others. We can commonly be found at concerts and other activities which attract Utah's youth.

The state-wide initiative for the Alliance this year comes with the slogan, "Don't buy their bull." They chose this as their slogan because the statewide initiative this year is all about trying to remove chewingtobacco ads from Utah's collage and university rodeos. On the Alliance's webpage it states: "The tobacco industry spends nearly $60 million a year in Utah to promote its products with many of their marketing efforts targeting youth. Since 1974, US Smokeless Tobacco (UST) has awarded $4.4 million to National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) athletes, including athletes at seven Utah colleges and universities. Youth smokeless tobacco users account for more than 11% of smokeless tobacco sales, and more than 50% developed the habit before they were 13. Let them know you don't buy it. To join the fight against UST, sign our petition to ask Utah colleges and universities to stop accepting tobacco funding."

The Phoenix Alliance is one of many advocate groups around the world taking a stand against the deceptions of the tobacco industry, and letting them know that they won't allow its deadly effects to go unnoticed any longer. Advocates around the world dream of a future where tobacco companies will no longer be in business, and that future is steadily approaching. With your help, together, we can all make a difference, and stand up for what we know is right. Don't live blinded or ignorant any longer, learn the truth and become educated. Knowledge is power, and with it, we can save lives and protect our future.

BIG aaaaaaa SHOW
September 29th, 2008

A yearly event for all, get excited for all the bands that played and the heads that banged! Just another day in the life of the Phoenix ALLIANCE!

Megaphones and microphones are just a little bit of our noise! Did you happen to see the mechanical bull????

Here are some happy riders....

Now we might not be the Marborlo Man, but who wants to die a slow and painful death anyway?  Our Bull Rides were free as we hooked people up with some new PA gear.

I NEED MORE COW BELL!!!!! just so we can ring it when someone wins!

All our riders had to do was stay on the bull for 7 seconds, only 7. Why 7? Well one drop of nicotine in the blood stream will kill you in SEVEN SECONDS. And I could be wrong, and I'm not, but a tobacco exec said that nicotine is the reason they are in business, they are selling nicotine.  Why are you not dead yet? Get the truth!!! They add other chemicals to help absorbe nicotine like ammonia. YAY, when you smoke a cigarrett you are inhaling the same stuff I clean my toilet with. Awesome.

Hey How did Mario get on the bull? wtf??

What retreat?
September 20th, 2008

The brave....the STRONG.....the Smart????

This year's Youth Leadership Board had a little group meeting to really set you up to fight against the tobacco companies. You know, study the art of tobacco industry manipulation, working with legislators, and working with people like you.

But really- these people are pretty weird!!

What are they pointing at?

OMG it's AST!!!
September 17th, 2008

If you even made it to ONE of the four days of the AST Mt Dew Tour then maybe you saw Shekler, maybe you saw Chaz Ortiz BEAT Shekler in the Park final or maybe you camped out in the dirt park for the FMX/BMX dirt.  Well where ever you were, we were there every day.  Quite possibly the most fun we've had in a long time.  If you were there we were doing some crazy weird games all for the sweet victory of winning Phoenix Alliance Gear.

It was an exhausting couple of days but the friends we made were pretty freaking sweet!  And we really wanted to get our message out there, for real- tobacco companies fill you with lies. I guess they neglect to tell you that the tobacco you smoke is the crap they swept off the ground. The Phoenix Alliance isn't against smokers, but what gives? We are against a company that won't tell you what they put in their products because they know if you knew that, you would be pissed too.

And if the tobacco companies think we will slow down and give up our fight, well they are in for it. In the words of Tim McIlrath, "We run on the fumes of injustice, we'll never die with the fuel that you give us, keep it coming 'cause I'm prepared to burn, Keep runnin, find me at every turn"

Check out our pics!

A taste of our 'so You Think you can DANCE'

The little things that amaze us!! And our bleeding knees!

These are our lovely volunteers that had to get HOOPED for a t-shirt! And fantastic dancers!

So if you could fit a WHOLE Wendy's burger in your mouth, you won!!!

We got about a 1000 signatures to eliminate the Tobacco Companies advertisements. Have you signed yet????

Gang signs and Phoenix Alliance members!

Bringing in the crowds!!! I have got to say that we had the biggest crowd that day!!! Oh and fighttheugly.com is our sister-partner-like thing, check them out too!

Our FEARless winner of our State of the Art Phoenix Alliance Skate Board!

awww these were some happy memories.

Later----

Yep, it's back to school again; check out what we did for our summer VACATION!!
September 2nd, 2008

So, without school getting in the way, here are some things we got into...

We did a radio ad. Yeah that's right, we got together talked about what we wanted, ideas for a script, went to the studio and recorded our own voices.  If you haven't heard them on the radio CLICK HERE.  Let us know what you think!

This summer we made it to tons of skate parks all over Utah.  What else are you going to do on a hot day but to bust a new move on your board or bust your ankle?  Either way we gave away free Phoenix Alliance gear.  Congrats goes to Taylor for winning the BMX bike from 97.1 ZHT

Next on our summer trip we tried to shock people at the Real Salt Lake soccer game with how many people die each hour from smoking.  WHAT? You didn't know? Count the bags, you'll find 50!  THE tobacco industry is killing 50 PEOPLE an hours.  So in a days work for them rounds it out to 1,200.  Incredible they are still in business!

No summer would be complete with out the Vans Warped Tour!!! a show we couldn't miss.  We gave some lucky winners a Phoenix Alliance iPod nano and a pretty amazing long board.  I'm sure you were there, check out the pics BELOW!!

This is our lovely booth complete with spinny prize wheel

The LongBoard winner!

The ipod winner!

Gabe from Cobra Starship stopping by to say "HEY Phoenix Alliance, I love you guys!"

Mike from the Academy Is, loves us too!

So Warped Tour wasn't the only show; we also went to 311 and Crue Tour... two different extremes but we were still telling people how manipulative the tobacco industry is! To prove we're not buying into what their selling we have a photo contest to show how crazy they are. Yeah we might be making a weird face, but at least we still have a face!

Ha ha, it was a funny night! This last guy was the winner, but hard group to pick from out of the 100 that participated!

Summers not over yet and our beloved and fav dj PORTIA from X96 asked us to help her quit smoking.  She came to the right group!! Every Sunday right before live and local we called her to see how she did and gave her tips to stay smoke-free.  She is doing great so you should call her on Sundays, request a song, and tell her congrats on kicking the habit!!!

Here is the X96 booth at warped tour, Portia's giving us the big thumbs up!

And uh we might have this giant little crush on Skate parks, ha ha! We just have so much fun on them so we went to the Slug Skate Comp.  We're not the best on a sk8board but we tore up the Guitar Hero comp!! Playing GH3 was the hardest work we did, but we managed to pull through!  There was cool graffiti, and of course a winning pic of the winner of the skateboard!!

Warming up to play some GUITAR-HERO!

The awesome winner of the PA SkAte Board!

Our group could not be complete without the adoring guidance from the Youth Leadership Board (YLB)! We just had our awards night and partied it up with the YLB for 2008-2009 year.  Who said your hard work doesn't pay off?  Here are the PA members that did an amazing JOB! And we thank them for everything they did last year!!

They look crazy, but they are some of the best advocates!

Here's the starting line for the new year for us! YIKES! JK we can't wait to get rolling and fighting back against the industry!

Stay tuned for the next update and see ya later!

YLB stands for Youth Leadership Board
June 23rd, 2008
You might have heard YLB when you hear about Phoenix Alliance.  Well the the Phoenix Alliance can't function with out the youth from the YLB.  They meet once a month and conspire what the group will do next.  They are the evil brains behind bringing down a multi-billion dollar company that sells lies and death.  If you are interested in getting more involved with the Phoenix Alliance, then the YLB is your answer. You meet incredible people and you can use this as volunteer hours, job referrences or college resume. To get an application email ademing@utah.gov.  Simple answer the questions and email it back, that easy.  Oh and youth on the ylb get a check for $100 at the end of the year for a job well done. So it's cash in you pocket! Applications ARE due July 11, 2008!!!! blog-group.JPG Here is the current group! No reason you shouldn't join!

Another Rock Concert for the PA
June 11th, 2008
We try to make it to the Avalon whenever we can, this time it was for the Dollyrots concert.  We had a fun time doing our thing, you know, pushing people's ideas about the tobacco industry.  Did you know that smoking among teens has dropped dramatically since 1997?  So that means youth are enjoying a life that doesn't include addiction to nicotine.  And even better there are places to hange out at that are smok-free like the Avalon.  Well here are some pics we wanted to put up.  Big THANKS goes to The Dollyrots, they were so nice to meet and they rock, and Unknown Anthem for the shout out they gave us on stage! dolly-1.jpg Our lovely booth with PA members! dolly-2.jpg Keeping an eye out for our petition! dolly-3.jpg Kelly from the Dollyrots dolly-4.jpg Luis dolly-5.jpg Perfect rock star jump dolly-6.jpg Group shot with Kelly dolly-7.jpg Hanging out with Chris dolly-8.jpg Quality time with Luis It was a fun night of advocacy and punk rock music.  And don't worry, we'll do it again!

BOB, your next best friend
April 3rd, 2008
BOB stands for Battle of the Bands, a competition for the best high school bands to compete against each other, all in one night of glory.  The Phoenix Alliance was there, rocking out to Guitar Hero II cuz we don't have a band, but who knows what could happen next year?  We had plenty of people come challenge their friends to a game of Guitar Hero while we challenged them to question the tobacco industry.  We are still looking for support for our petition, so don't forget to get your friends to come to our next event! bob-1.JPG bob-2.JPG bob-3.JPG bob-4.JPG bob-5.JPG bob-6.JPG bob-7.JPG bob-8.JPG bob-9.JPG Thanks again to everyone we will see you soon!

Brighton Spit-out for a snowboard
March 29th, 2008
What to say about Brighton, hmmmm, we had a contest to see who could show us their funniest face, we had people vote on the Polaroids, and gave away a new custome Revolution snowbard the shole while we informed people why they should not accept tobacco advertising in Utah's colleges and rodeos.  It was such a blast to be there and to get our message across. We want to post some of the pictures we took, so relax and have fun.  And if you are questioning why we want tobacco advertising out, go to our petition, learn for yourself and support us in our fight! Phoenix Alliance’ers taking control Phoenix Alliance'ers taking control brighton-2.JPG  This is how we like to advertise brighton-3.JPG You might remember these bunnies from our website.  If not, try and find them! brighton-4.JPG Here we are in our daily fight against the Tobacco Industry brighton-5.JPG Our lovely booth with everyone there brighton-6.JPG Even Channel 4 came out to see what was up brighton-7.JPG I know this picture makes you want to join! brighton-8.JPG  Portia from x96 is announcing the winner brighton-9.JPG Our lucky winner brighton-10.JPG Here are some great faces of the Phoenix Alliance brighton-11.JPG Hard competition but it was fun Thanks again to everyone who supported us and made it out. See you soon!

Your chance to win a Snowboard
February 18th, 2008
You might have heard that the Phoenix Alliance will be at Brighton Ski resort Feb 23, from 11-3. You also might have heard that you can take a shot at winning a brand new Revolution snowboard. And the best thing is you don't have to be able to pop a 540 or board slide your way to victory, you only have to show us your face. We want to see the funniest, ugliest, creepiest, craziest face you can make. We'll take the picture and it is up to the voters to decide the winner.  We are doing this because there are many faces to tobacco; the industry only shows you the pretty ones.  We are here to show you the manipulation the tobacco industy uses to trick you into buying their product. Don't have a snowboard, so why go to brighton? We will be at the base lodge so you don't need a lift ticket to participate. Come hang out with us, and that snowboard could be yours.  If you want to a part of the Phoenix Alliance, go to our join page, from there we will email you updates and let you know when our next event is.  Hey even if you don't win the snowboard we will have plenty of other prizes all in the fight against tobacco.  If you have more questions call 801-538-7085 or just show up.

50 Deaths an Hour from Smoking; Give it up!
December 9th, 2007
Everyone knows smoking isn’t the best idea for you, even if the tobacco industry keeps shoving advertisements down our throats. For whatever reason people begin to smoke, you can always find a reason to quit. The Great American Smoke-Out is a day to quit smoking, even if it is for one day. For most, giving up tobacco is hard and they end up trying more than once. To help remind everyone to try again the Phoenix Alliance loaded up 50 body bags and stomped up and down Main Street in Salt Lake City to show the number of people who die every hour from smoking related illness, 50 an hour, who knows who could be next. Hopefully we made an impression out there; we even made it on the news! You can catch us here on  deseretnews.com. If you want more information about the Great American Smoke-Out or tips for quitting go to cancer.org. If you or anyone you know is serious about quitting tobacco and could use some help, call 1-888-567-TRUTH If you want to be part of the Phoenix Alliance, click on our Join  page. Here are some pictures of what happened!

Phoenix Alliance at the BASh
November 23rd, 2007
Hey boys and girls of all ages that were at the X96 Maverik Big A** Show! We had a blast giving away free bull rides, t-shirts, air fresheners all day and to finish it all off with an ipod nano give away.  We hope you enjoyed yourself too.  The bands rocked and it was so nice to be out of the cold rain and inside the Salt Palace. This was a big day for us because we launch our new campaign, "Don't Buy Their Bull."  We want to eliminate U.S. Smokeless tobacco from advertising at college rodeos.  This is our way of fighting against the industry promoting to youth as they try to replace the 1200 that die a day from tobacco use.  If you want to support us sign the petition here. If you didn't make it the show here are some photos of what you missed! group-2.JPG Happy PA members right before doors open! Free Bull Rides! Bull rides are more fun when they're free! petition-signing.JPG Phoenix Alliance Booth working hard to control the masses! It's actually hard to keep people away. Everyone here is supporting our cause of fighting against tobacco. Come to our next event to learn more! ipod-winner.JPG We mentioned we gave away an Ipod nano right? Well here is our winner!
